Daikin Mini-Split Code E5

Soft lockout

On pair (single-zone) systems, OL activation - the compressor's overload protector tripped. On RMXS multi-split systems the same code means compressor motor lock: the compressor will not start even in forced start-up mode.

Manual wording: “E5 OL activation (compressor overload)

Documented for: FTXS-L, H-Series, FTXM-W/V pair systems (compressor overload); RMXS multi-split (compressor motor lock)

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Refrigerant shortage
  2. Defective stop valve or stop valve left closed
  3. Defective discharge pipe thermistor
  4. Defective electronic expansion valve or coil
  5. Defective four way valve or coil
  6. Water mixed in refrigerant
  7. Defective outdoor unit PCB
  8. Compressor lock or high differential pressure (multi-split)
  9. Incorrect UVW wiring (multi-split)

What you can safely check yourself

  • Check the outdoor unit has clear airflow and is not blocked by snow, leaves or stored items
  • Check and replace the indoor unit air filters
  • Turn the system off at the breaker or disconnect switch and back on once

When to call a technician

E5 points at the compressor and the refrigerant circuit. It needs a technician with gauges - repeated restarts on an overloaded compressor will kill it.

A Daikin mini-split throwing this code repeatedly has a reason — clearing the code without fixing the cause just hides it.
