Daikin Mini-Split Code A5

Warning

Freeze-up protection control or heating peak-cut control. In cooling, the indoor coil dropped below 32F and the unit halted so the coil does not ice over. In heating, the indoor coil went above roughly 140-149F and the unit cut back or halted.

Manual wording: “A5 Freeze-up protection control or heating peak-cut control

Documented for: FTXS-L, FDXS-L, H-Series, FTXM-W/V (Atmosphera), RMXS multi-split indoor units

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Clogged air filter of the indoor unit
  2. Short-circuited air (discharge air blowing straight back into the return)
  3. Dust accumulation on the indoor heat exchanger
  4. Defective indoor heat exchanger thermistor
  5. Defective indoor unit PCB

What you can safely check yourself

  • Check and clean or replace the indoor unit air filters - this is the number one cause
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the indoor unit's air intake or discharge (furniture, curtains, shelving)
  • Give the unit time to thaw with the fan running before restarting
  • Check the outdoor unit is not buried in snow or leaves

When to call a technician

If A5 returns with clean filters and clear airflow, the indoor coil is dirty or the system is low on refrigerant - both need a technician. Do not keep restarting a unit that is icing up.

A Daikin mini-split throwing this code repeatedly has a reason — clearing the code without fixing the cause just hides it.
