Goodman Furnace Code 6

Safety faultShown as: 6 flashes, then a pause, repeating

Open rollout limit (or blown control board fuse). A manual-reset rollout switch on the burner assembly tripped because flame rolled out of the heat exchanger instead of being drawn in.

Manual wording: “Open Rollout Temperature Limit Switch

Documented for: Goodman GMS8, GMH8, GDS8, GDH8, GHS8, GME8, GMES80, GCES80, GMSS92, GMSS96, GCSS96 (single red diagnostic LED)

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Flame rollout
  2. Misaligned burners
  3. Blocked flue and/or air inlet pipe
  4. Failed induced draft blower
  5. Short in 24 volt AC control circuits or safety circuits
  6. Faulty rollout limit
  7. Blown integrated control module fuse

What you can safely check yourself

  • Turn the furnace off at its power switch and leave it off
  • If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside

When to call a technician

Flame rollout means combustion gases are coming out of the burner box. This is a technician-only repair (rollout limits are manual reset for exactly that reason) and often points at a blocked flue or a cracked heat exchanger. Never reset a rollout switch yourself.

A Goodman furnace throwing this code repeatedly has a reason — clearing the code without fixing the cause just hides it.
