Rheem Furnace Code 14

Safety fault

Flame present with the gas valve off. The control is seeing flame when there should be none. The blower and inducer run at maximum until the condition clears, then the furnace enters a one-hour lockout showing 14 alternating with 10. The manual calls this extremely critical.

Manual wording: “FLAME PRESENT WITH GAS VALVE OFF ... This fault indicates flame is present when it should not be. Flame is seen to be present when the gas valve is supposed to be off.”

Likely causes, most common first

  1. Field mis-wiring of 24VAC to the gas valve main solenoid
  2. Faulty gas valve stuck in the OPEN position
  3. Faulty furnace control (signal improperly sensed when it should not be sensed at all)

What you can safely check yourself

  • If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas utility from outside.
  • Otherwise, leave the furnace alone and call for service.

When to call a technician

Call a technician immediately. A gas valve stuck open is a gas-safety fault - do not attempt any troubleshooting, and never bypass or jumper anything on the gas valve circuit.

A Rheem furnace throwing this code repeatedly has a reason — clearing the code without fixing the cause just hides it.
